<-----The late Paul Williams

June 25: Right after I posted this entry word came that Michael Jackson had died, in Los Angeles. In the days that follow you will undoubtedly learn more about this tortured man than you probably ever wanted to know. I'm going to leave that to the tabloids. Suffice to say, I admired the talent. Rest In Peace, Michael

I happen to like tonight's show. There's some good stuff and I get to play The Temptations. Paul Williams was born July 2nd so he's one of the birthday guests, this week. He was my second favorite lead singer (Eddie Kendricks being #1) of The Tempts. In fact, I prefer the earlier Tempts recordings before Berry Gordy hit on the "formula". I'd rather listen to Paul and Eddie than David Ruffin.

Tonight, I'm also looking at a group from Harrisburg, The Soulville All-Stars. Quite a talented group of young men and some of them are still playing, today. (Hi Rich and Kirk)

Don't forget, there's a "Request Night" on July 15th, please get your e-mails to me as soon as you can. Some of these songs take some real "hunting".

If you get a chance, pop over to youtube com and check out www.youtube.com/user/DaddyClb

It's Thom Colson's thing featuring Custer's Last Band members of Class Of 60 Somethin'.

Have a great week, everybody.

June 22 2009

Tonight's show features the music of Eddie Floyd and Doc Pomus and there are other great songs and musicians as well. The group, at the left, is Jon Bartel and The Soul Masters from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

I found the pix while googling. It's a bit later in their career as you can tell by the 70's haircuts.

Back in the mid/late 60's this group played predominately black clubs all across the northeast. They packed the house, by the way. I first saw them at Lawson's in Harrisburg. Whenever they were in town I made it a point to stop in and just listen. Jon could kick hell out of a B3 and Larry O'Brian was the first person I ever heard sing the notes as he was playing them. I know, big deal, but this was before anyone heard of George Benson.

As musical tastes changed in the 70's so did the group. They tried to move into the "fusion" sound of BS&T etc. but I always felt they were at their best playing jazz and soul. Great memories of a terrific band.

Have a great week and remember, July 15th is our request night. Send those e-mails and I'll do my best.

Thank you for joining us.

June 15, 2009 (A.K.A. Why Beach Music?)

As I write this it's actually June 3. It's kind of nice being able to actually get ahead on these shows. It gives me more time to find "new" music.

Have you noticed an influx of "Beach Music" the past couple of weeks? There's a good reason for this. It's pretty darn good! I first, really, paid attention to this almost three years ago. The Techie Gnome and I were searching for a cut of "The Cheater" by Bob Kuban & The In Men. We found it on a beach music compilation that featured The Embers. Guess what? "I Love Beach Music" came on and the two of us looked at each other and turned it up! Kinda hooked me.

At first it was just The Embers and then CWB, Craig Woolard's band but as I kept digging, I found out more and more about the groups who played this scene. The Catalinas, The Winstons, Wille Tee, The Fantastic Shakers, the late Bill Pinkney and O.C. Smith, to name a few. Let me tell you, these people are pros.

The music they play fits in with the "soul" FNST plays. This is understandable when you realize how many of the great R&B acts these groups backed. Soul music will always come out on top. It's a sound that stays with you.

A few weeks ago I "found" another group. Legends Of The Beach. Featuring Jackie Gore, one of the founders of The Embers, and some very talented musicians they continue the "soul" of the beach. My thanks to Gerald Davis, of LOB, for the great e-mail and to Ripete Records for shipping the CD so quickly. I hope y'all are enjoying the sound as much as I am.

Tonight we feature Eddie Levert of The O'Jays, Lionel Richie (Lionel Richguy, lol) and the former lead singer of The Flamingos, Tommy Hunt. There's also music by Carolina Connection,

The Showmen and a super cut by Coastline.
